Biography

Sixteen years inside General Motors. A career devoted to intellectual property.

Cary W. Brooks founded the BrooksGroup in January 2012. Mr. Brooks has extensive experience in both prosecution and litigation of intellectual property matters. He was a shareholder in a midsize law firm prior to starting the BrooksGroup, and worked for 16 years as a patent attorney for General Motors Corporation, where his responsibilities included patent preparation and prosecution, infringement opinions, licensing, acquisitions and divestitures, and major litigation.

He served as an instructor for four and a half years in a nationally renowned seminar, teaching his peers techniques and strategies for crafting and drafting winning patents. Mr. Brooks was voted by his peers as one of the top lawyers in intellectual property law in the Metro Detroit Area in both 2012 and 2013 (dBusiness Journal November/December 2011 and November/December 2012).

Mr. Brooks has been a serious student of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit throughout his career, and uses the knowledge gained thereby to provide exceptional service to clients and seminars to a variety of select audiences, including corporations, general practice firms, CPA firms, business and professional groups, and foreign associates.

His professional experience also includes positions as patent counsel at BASF Corporation’s Coating and Inks Division and Chemical Division, and as an associate with Barnes, Kisselle, Raisch, Choate, Whittemore & Hulbert.
